I was so happy reading the front side of the Brantly-Pierce family holiday letter and so saddened when I turned it over.  Having gone through this again myself this past year, I am just glad that you are all holding each other close, as your love for one another is what really matters. I just made another contribution to Close The Gap in Cindy's memory, something I've been doing ever since she invited me to a CTG event in 2018.

In many ways you were more like a sister than a cousin. Here we are in Aunt Edith’s backyard just catching up on life.

Laughing with Cindy

Cindy was such a beautiful, vivacious person. My first impression of her was at our neighborhood block party. Well, actually, it was Curtis dressed as Snow White that was my first impression, but Cindy was holding his hand, walking down the street with him as normal as any wife would hold her Snow White husband's hand. She looked perfectly content and at ease. I later learned that she had made the costume for Curtis, which only added to my positive first impression. Needless to say, I had a fun conversation with her, one of many of the next few years. Then, when my daughter joined the Berkeley Crew team, I would see Cindy at meets. She would be perched in her beach chair along the shore, ready to make a lot of noise whenever Will's boat would appear for those few moments, racing down the river, Cindy cheering him on,…

Just learned about this yesterday – heartbroken, because we last spoke at Cindy’s 60th birthday fundraiser event where we also celebrated her 4th year in remission, and I had so been praying for her healing to continue…

The first time I met Cindy was at a BAM PTA meeting, where she argued with clarity, conviction, and deep emotion about some topic – I’m sure it was connected to equity, fairness, and the common good. Our paths kept crossing, from BAM via King to BHS and Crew. As tall moms, we could always spot each other across a crowd. Also among my memories: Several gatherings in her beautiful backyard, celebrating a school promotion together at a restaurant, and admiring her family being early EV adopters.

Sending love to Curtis, Will, and Clayton, as well as to Cindy’s wider family and friends. May her force for good continue to lighten a dark world!
